The Carbon Community is an environmental charity dedicated to accelerating carbon removal from the atmosphere, with breakthrough science. Focused on natural solutions, we started with a question. ‘How do you maximise carbon capture in a forest?’ This led to many conversations with leading environmental scientists that helped design our landmark research into helping trees grow faster, become more resilient and absorb more carbon from the air. To achieve this we bring together trees, science and people and have created a new broadleaf forest for future generations, enabling scientific research and providing opportunities for community science.

About The Carbon Community

The Carbon Community was founded in January 2020 with an aim to accelerate carbon removal from the atmosphere, with breakthrough science. Our primary focus is on forest ecosystem carbon.

Trees:
In March 2020, The Carbon Community purchased the land to create Glandwr Forest near Llandovery, Wales. It is now an award winning broadleaf forest which includes 40 hectares of trees and close to 30 hectares dedicated to meadows, rhos pasture and peatland. Nestled in the forest is The Carbon Community’s landmark carbon study, designed together with leading scientists this study looks at the impact of enhanced rock weathering and soil microbiome rewilding on tree growth, tree resilience, soil biodiversity and forest ecosystem carbon.

Science:
The carbon study was launched in May 2021 and involves 25,600 trees across 11 hectares of forest. There are 8 test cells and a control replicated 8 times across the study to allow for a robust result. Leading organisations involved in the study include – Imperial College London, The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Crowther Lab ETH Zurich, University of Sheffield and Swansea University. The creation of Glandwr Forest as a research facility has also enabled a number of scientists to conduct their own research at the site including Swansea University, Bangor University, University of Oxford, and the University of Sheffield.

People:
The Carbon Community runs a major community science program throughout the year including our flagship Big Tree Measure event which runs each October.

The Opportunity

Established in January 2020, The Carbon Community is now entering the next phase of development. The forest has been recognised with three awards at the Royal Welsh Show, the carbon study is now in its fourth year, and there is a successful citizen science program. To date this has been accomplished by our Trustees, our Scientific Advisory Board, our forestry partner, and our incredible volunteers.

The opportunity for our next phase of growth is to:

• Enhance the development of Glandwr Forest
• Bring the carbon study research program to the critical five year phase in 2026 and look for future opportunities based on the outcomes of the study
• Continue the development of Glandwr Forest as a research facility
• Enhance our community science and volunteering programs
